So earlier this afternoon, I headed up to Lexington to take care of some errands and appointments. I had some extra time, so I stopped off at Common Grounds Coffee House. That part wasn’t the adventure, that was some extremely relaxing chill-out time. I’ll have to start going there more often. The adventure came after my last appointment of the day.
While I was still at Common Grounds, I noticed this tweet @amartindesign sent out to remind people about the SMC Lexington meeting. Taking note of what time it was going to start, I thought to myself, “Goodie, I finally managed to be in town on the same day as an SMC Lex event.” So I RSVP on their Facebook group page, and head off to my meeting. The meeting was uneventful, and went smoothly so I left with plenty of time to head back over to Awesome, Inc. for the SMC thing.
I would like to preface this next part by mentioning that no matter how small-town-ish this next part makes me sound, I grew up in Phoenix, AZ and the San Francisco Bay Area. So I learned to drive in heavy traffic filled with angst-ridden drivers. But since I got married (5 years in May!), I’ve lived in smaller towns like Lake Havasu City, AZ.
I handled navigating the one way streets and everything just fine, but I had never been to Awesome, Inc. before. I did a loop consisting of Main, Rose, and Vine at least three times before I bothered to look on the left hand side of the road. Finally, there it was! I had already driven past it, so I turn left on Rose, and see a sign for Commerce Lexington in front of a seemingly free parking lot. In I go! But I see signs everywhere with “Employee Parking Only.” Then I see “Parking for Cornett Only. Violators Will Be Ridiculed.” At that point, I just wanted to get inside, because I was already more than 15 minutes late. So I figured I could stand a little ridicule. I parked and headed inside.
Stepping in the door of 348 E. Main Street, I was greeted by a couple dancing around. “The SMC can’t possibly be this cool,” I think to myself. I asked if I had the right place; if this was Awesome, Inc.
“Yes,” says the dancing girl.
“Is this where the Social Media Club is meeting,” I ask.
I get a blank stare, followed by her gliding over to a laptop in the back of the room. She checks a calendar of events.
“Nope, that’s Friday. But you can stick around and learn how to do the Fox Trot, if you want,” invites the girl.
FRIDAY! Dang it all. At least I’ll know where I’m going, when I come back on the right day. I didn’t stay to dance, but I’m going to surprise my wife soon. She’s always talked about how much fun it would be to learn to dance.
